Am I in the minority here? Most people I talk to seem to think that e-Books are great and ordinary books are going to go the way of the dodo in the next 5 years… e-Book readers do seem to be getting better and better, but here’s why real books are going to be around… Continue reading e-books: not a threat to real books any time soon

Quarterly book sale!
This morning was the quarterly book sale at our local library. We scored a decent haul at $1 each for hardbacks and $0.50 for paperbacks. Plenty of books for mini-Elbeno (including a looks-like-new copy of Sheep in a Jeep). Other highlights for $1 each are a hardback like-new copy of Climbing Mount Improbable and a… Continue reading Quarterly book sale!
Amazon failed me…
I’ve had QED: The Strange Theory of Light and Matter on order since September. They have repeatedly delayed it and delayed it, asking me for confirmation that I still want it. Yesterday I ordered it from Wal*Mart instead and it’s just shipped. I’m going to leave my Amazon order unconfirmed and it will timeout soon.… Continue reading Amazon failed me…

A fascinating read
Mrs Elbeno bought me Silence On The Wire for my birthday. It’s been a fascinating read. There are tons of interesting things you can do with IP packets, both in the field of passive forensic analysis and for the purposes of active subversion. There are a lot of fascinating lower tech attacks on computer data… Continue reading A fascinating read
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
I finished reading it on Friday, and I liked it, but I was a little disappointed. Formulaic Empire-Strikes-Back plot to tee up book seven: the plot is winding up, and it shows. J.K. is also quite clearly playing to the movies, which is not necessarily a bad thing: I can see several puerile jokes making… Continue reading Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince
Book sale!
Remembered the book sale today at our local library. Spent $23 and came back with a box full of books. Actually, I limited myself pretty well, but Mrs Elbeno went for the paperbacks in a big way. We like book sales.
Impulse buy!
Practical Common Lisp by Peter Seibel. I’ve studied a bit of Lisp; enough to get interested. Of course I studied functional programming in college so the concepts are not so mind bending as they would be at first. Hopefully this book will take my Lisp into the realm of the practical.
