Yahoo News article, via Slashdot. Hollywood throws a tantrum because the games industry doesn’t play their game. Boo hoo. “It is simply shortsighted to believe that consumers don’t care about the artistic quality of the characters.” It is simply naïf to believe that consumers even notice voice acting except when it’s intolerably bad. And most… Continue reading Voice actors threaten video game strike

E3 2005
E3 2005: the end of the first day (and the only day I’ll be attending). Got there by carpool just after 9am and parking was no trouble. We got into one of the South Hall parking structures. $10 for the day is very cheap downtown parking between 4! Badge pickup was also quick – just… Continue reading E3 2005
E3 Approaches…
…and I have my badge. I see that the registration completion & what I assume is lanyard pickup starts at 8, so I think I’ll be turning up early this year (even though the show doesn’t start until 10 on the first day). Last year I turned up at 10 and spent 2 hours queueing… Continue reading E3 Approaches…
SOE announce "Exchange Servers"
Sony are launching an escrow/auction service for Everquest 2, whereby players can sell in-game items, coinage and characters for real-life currency. They are applying it only to certain servers (to be decided via an in-game poll, and with the option for players to move servers). It’s a $200m-a-year industry, apparently, and 40% of their customer… Continue reading SOE announce "Exchange Servers"
Hypnotic sort of game…
The grid game. Sort of like Conway’s Life: less of a game and more of a fascinating thing to watch, as the patterns die out, then suddenly start to spread again. My best “score” is 813.
Tiddlywinks no more at Cambridge?
The Guardian has a story about the impending demise of tiddlywinks. That would be a sad day. Even though I haven’t played in a while because of geographical reasons, I did remember to join ETwA this year.
WoW… same old crowd
The game’s fun. I can see it getting repetitive fairly quickly though. Not sure about the longevity, but it’s something I had to play both for fun and for research reasons. It has a ton of features designed to make it easy on the player. I’d forgotten about the MMORPG crowd. This being my 4th… Continue reading WoW… same old crowd
Nanaca Crash!
Another silly fun Japanese game. The idea seems to be to send the guy flying as far as possible, using a combination of moves and taking advantage of people on the ground while avoiding others. I don’t really understand everything that’s happening, but it’s kinda fun! My best score: a paltry 2289.58m.
SHA-1 Followup
More re the SHA-1 result: Around $30M (give or take a few million) should build you a machine to find a collision in a few days. What previously took (say) the NSA 40 years to figure out now takes about a week. A second preimage attack is theoretically 2106, according to a Schneier paper. If… Continue reading SHA-1 Followup
Final Fantasy II
Is it just me, or is it needlessly difficult? The problem is this: 1. Characters progress according to how they are played. If you fight with swords a lot, you get good with swords. If you get hit a lot, your HP goes up. If you do a lot of magic, your MP goes up.… Continue reading Final Fantasy II
