Right, that 100 books meme that’s been going around.
First, it’s not really from the BBC. It’s from the Guardian. And it’s based on a poll from World Book Day 2007.
Second, since it’s based on a poll, it reflects popular books, so I’m not sure why there seems to be a persistent myth that the average person has read only 6. Probably a ruse to make the meme spread as everyone feels superior.
Anyway, it seems there are a bunch of books on there that are good, and I will probably read some. I have read about a quarter of the list and I own several on the list that I haven’t yet read. In particular, I should make another attempt at each of the following, which I have tried before and failed to make much headway in:
- The Count of Monte Cristo (Mrs. Elbeno’s favourite book)
- Crime and Punishment
- Rebecca
- Anything by C. Dickens
